IMC-USA Urges AP Govt. to Take Action on Report Confirming Torture of Youth in Hyderabad

Indian Muslim Council – USA (http://www.imc-usa.org), an advocacy group dedicated towards safeguarding India’s pluralist and tolerant ethos, urges action from all those who believe in justice to demand the Andhra Pradesh state government to outline what actions will be taken to address the findings of the report submitted by L. Ravi Chander, Advocate Commissioner, to the AP Minorities Commissions.

In response to the illegal detention and torture of Muslim youth in Hyderabad by state police in the aftermath of the August 25th bombings the AP Minorities Commission appointed advocate L Ravi Chander to investigate these claims. An interim report a month later confirmed abuse of power by the police.

A full report of the investigation including interviews with 20 detainees was submitted to minorities Commission in October 2008.

IMC-USA urges action on illegal detention and torture of Muslim youth in Hyderabad

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 09, 2007

Indian Muslim Council – USA (http://www.imc-usa.org), an advocacy group dedicated towards safeguarding India’s pluralist and tolerant ethos, urges action from all those who believe in due process to demand transparent conduct from Hyderabad City Police forces.

Desperate to cover up the administration’s failure in stopping terrorist incidents and under pressure to show results in the wake of the twin blasts, scores of indiscriminate arrests have apparently been made without even the semblance of a proper investigation. The police has shown itself time and again predisposed to victimize the Muslim community in the form of arrests and torture without any due diligence and formal charges.

IMC-USA urges all concerned to:

Urge star news channel to publicly apologize for its falsified reporting against Darul-ul-Uloom Deoband

October 08, 2006

ACTION ALERT

The Star News Channel's recent 'sting operation' against a scholar of Darul-Uloom Deoband, India, produced a report which on further enquiry turned out to be spurious and defamatory. The channel's report portrayed Mufti Habibur Rahman as accepting money from a person who had requested an injunction (Fatwa) regarding credit card usage. The Darul-Uloom had suspended the Mufti after the report and on further investigation found him to be innocent. The statement (fatwa) given by the Mufti was evaluated as being in consonance with the teachings of Islam.
